TECH EDGE: Mobile Learning In The Classroom Podcasts CREATIVITY
|
The TECH edge youtube channel has plenty of youtube podcasts for teachers to choose from to their liking. I found myself searching for podcasts that were more for the general classroom and not a specific subject. When I saw "Creativity" I was immediately interested. This podcast is hosted by Guy Trainin who is professor at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. His research focus is the integration of technology with education and the arts which goes great in the apps I will be reviewing.

This app is called Play-Doh TOUCH. This FREE app allows users to be very creative in which it requires hands on creativity to play the game. This is how the game works; You create your own play-doh land and they tell you what shapes to physically create in your hands with play-doh. You then take a picture of what you have created and use it as a game piece. Once you start collecting play-doh with your game piece you get to create more game pieces with the play-doh in your hands.
When I was playing with the app I immediately thought of how great this would be for a kindergarten classroom. This app not only is getting the kids familiar with technology but it requires hands on activities. I have never seen an app like this and can definitely see me using this app as a science station in my future classroom.
I could not fully explore the app because I do not own play-doh but some cons that I learned from the podcast was that the creativity is limited. This app requires you to make the objects it shows. I still believe teachers could use this as a science station as the students are still hands on with the play-doh and it teaches them how to manipulate objects using their hands.

The second app I will be reviewing is called Me by Tinybop. This $2.99 app is a great way for students to focus on themselves and make a universe about everything and anything they want. You can create multiple accounts that allow you to create pretty much anything you want. Starting off, it asks you simple questions about you. Once your account is created you are able to add anything you want. Things you like, your dreams, record sounds, take photos, etc.
This can be a great way to start off the school year in a 1st-4th grade classroom. Since there are multiple accounts you can have each student create their own universe. With their creations about themselves, the teacher can turn this into a writing activity. The students can write an autobiography about themselves with what they have created within the app.
As I was exploring Me by Tinybop I was realizing how easy and fun this would be for students to do in the classroom. If the teacher made the objectives clear on how to use it and what to include while making the app, it would make writing their autobiographies easy for them and gets them familiar with using technology.
